Abstract

Purpose: The main objective of this study is to examine the importance of digital libraries during the COVID-19 pandemic in dissemination of information services, to know the users’ perspectives towards its success and also examines the challenges faced by the libraries during this pandemic and also about how the librarians cope up with the challenges and function in the new normal situation.
Methodology: An online Pan-India survey was conducted among library professionals and user communities. By using survey instrument, Google Form, a total of 12 questions were asked from general to specific towards use of digital libraries during pandemic period. Total 250 responses were received. The responses received were categorized, analyzed and presented in this paper. The research data were primarily collected from blogs, social media and online survey which were carried out among various library professionals to know their perspective towards digital libraries, new skill requirement and current challenges faced by the libraries in the new normal imposed on us due to COVID-19 pandemic.
Findings: This study reveals that the library professionals are eager to learn online technologies for developing and delivering information services. It also identifies that to remain connected and to spread knowledge, large numbers of online webinars are conducted in library fields. The major challenges the librarians faced during COVID-19 are physical distancing from workplace, fear of disease contraction, Lack of high speed internet connection, low response of users in social media platforms etc.
Originality/ value: This is an original study conducted in India which gives an overview on the transformation of libraries by using digital library services to meet the need of the users during COVID-19.

Nikhil Kumar is Information Assistant, The Energy and Resources institute (TERI), New Delhi. He has a demonstrated history of working in Library. He has a specialization in digital marketing, library management and social media. He has an experience of working in Govt. sanctioned projects related to knowledge industry in Iron and Steel & Paper and Pulp sector and also in the project Study of Studies based on North Eastern region. He has cleared UGC’s JRF and NET for lectureship in Library and Information Science.

P K Bhattacharya, The Energy and Resources Institute, New Delhi, India

P K Bhattacharya, PhD, is Senior Fellow & Associate Director at Knowledge Resource Centre, TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute), New Delhi. He specializes in information processing, organizing, and analysis; database management; editorial activities and information service development. His recent area of work is in Knowledge Management, Research Data Management, IPR and its implementation. Dr. Bhattacharya has also functions as Head of Environmental Information System at TERI and implemented several community driven projects and skill development trainings resulted into livelihood generation. He is Editor of World digital Libraries: An International Journal. He published over 45 research papers, book chapters, bibliographies and organized 6 international conferences and a number of academic workshops. He teaches BLIS and MLIS students in IGNOU and has developed multiple training course modules and videos for INFLIBNET, UGC and IGNOU. He is also Associate Professor and PhD Guide of RC University, Jharkhand.

R N Malviya, Sushant University, Haryana, India

R N Malviya, PhD, is University Librarian, at Rishihood University, Sonipat, Haryana. He has more than 32 years of experience in field of Research, Library and Information Services. Prior to this, he worked as University Librarian in Ansal University, Haryana.  Dr. Malviya also served as Professor, Department Head and University Librarian at Swami Vivekanand Subharti University, Meerut, U.P and Member of Research Development Council and PhD Guide of RC University, Jharkhand. He is also consultant to several organizations in setting up their specialized library and information centers. He is member of all major Indian Library Associations and organizers of many National and International Conferences. He also teaches BLIS and MLIS students in IGNOU Study Centre. He has guided a number of Students of MLIS, PGDLAN and visiting professor & PhD Guide in various universities. Managing Editor of IResearch International Journal of Information Management. He has published 16 books and 62 research papers in refereed Journals.
